From Rescue to Release: Our Special River Otter Gets His Second Chance

Sometimes a single animal tells the story of exactly why wildlife rehabilitation matters.

Earlier this month, a North American river otter was found injured in a Vacaville roadway after being struck by a vehicle. He had suffered significant head trauma and swelling around his brain, and when he came into our care, we didn't know what the days ahead would bring.

Thankfully, there were no broken bones — and this little guy proved to be a fighter.

With veterinary treatment, medication, careful monitoring, and time to heal, he continued to improve. Each day brought encouraging signs that he was getting closer to being the healthy, independent — and appropriately wild! — otter we hoped to see.

His story also captured the attention of our community and the media, with KRON4 featuring his rescue and recoveryand following his journey.

And now we have the news we've been waiting to share…

He's ready to go back to the wild!

Dr. Chen and the Solano Wildlife team are working to select an appropriate location within the Vacaville waterways for his return. While rehabilitated wildlife is ordinarily released as close as possible to where it was found, his original location is in a heavily traveled area where waterways intersect with roads — the very danger that brought him to us in the first place.

Our goal isn't simply to release an animal. It's to give that animal the best possible chance to stay wild and thrive.

Soon, we'll open his carrier and give him that chance.

For us, there is no better ending.

From being injured on the side of a road to returning to the waterways where he belongs, this is what a second chance looks like.
